Sweet potato chat is a simplest and healthiest of all chat recipes made of sweet potato or shakarkandi. This is the best alternative for regular and popular aloo chat recipes as it has no unhealthy ingredient. In India, sweet potato is highly consumed on fasting like Navratri. It tastes so yum that you can enjoy this chat at any time without waiting for fasting occasions. 

Chat recipes make your mouth start watering. And if the chat recipe is healthy, you can eat at any time of the day without worrying about the calories and fats. Sweet potato chat is the quick non-fat snack item which you can munch on. The sweetness of the sweet potato or shakarkandi goes very well with the ingredients used in this recipe.

Sweet Potato chat

For making sweet potato chat, unlike normal potato chat, here we need to first boil the sweet potatoes until they are soft and tender. Later, you can either directly use the boiled potatoes. Or like me, dry (or in a little oil) roast the boiled and cubed sweet potatoes on high flame for few minutes. Later, add the chat ingredients and your dish is ready.

If you are making this chat recipe for fasting, add dry spices which can be consumed on fasting. Whereas, if you are making this on any other day other than fasting, you can add spices of your choice like chat masala, amchur powder, etc.

Sweet potato chat

Sweet potato chat is a simplest and healthiest of all chat recipes made of sweet potato or shakarkandi.

Materials

  • 2 Sweet potatoes
  • 1 Onion finely chopped
  • ½ Tomato finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • ½ tsp Ginger grated
  • ½ cup Roasted peanuts
  • Salt per taste
  • ½ tsp Roasted and ground flax seeds
  • Fat pinch of Red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp chat masala
  • ½ tsp Oregano herb Optional
  • Pinch of Black pepper salt
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice

Instructions

For boiling sweet potato or shakarkandi

  • Rinse the sweet potato pieces very well under running water.
  • Then, cook the sweet potatoes in the pressure cooker for about 3 to 4 whistles. Here, I have boiled 3 big sweet potatoes, but am using only 2 of them for making the chat.
  • Turn off the flame and cool down the sweet potatoes. Once cooled, peel off the skin and chop them into cubes.

For making sweet potato or shakarkandi chat:

  • This step is completely optional but if you try this, it would turn awesome.
    Heat a tbsp of oil in a kadhai or thick bottom wide pan, and shallow fry the chopped sweet potatoes on high flame for few minutes till it turns little brown and crisp. You can even dry roast them (without oil).
  • Later, remove them on a kitchen towel and allow it to cool down.
  • Till then, take a large mixing bowl and add ingredients for making the chat.
  • Firstly, add the chopped onions.
  • Then, add finely chopped coriander leaves followed by chopped tomatoes.
  • Then add roasted and peeled peanuts.
  • Add salt, ground flax seeds, red chilli powder, chat masala, oregano herbs, black pepper powder, and Lemon juice. 
  • Mix all the ingredients very well.
  • Then, add roasted sweet potatoes into the mixing bowl and mix gently. Mix it slowly to avoid sweet potatoes from mashing.
  • Sweet potato chat is ready to be served with the additional topping of chat masala, oregano and lemon juice.

Important tips for making sweet potato chat:

  1. You can use regular potatoes or baby potatoes or corns for making this chat recipe.
  2. If making for fast, avoid regular salt, chilli powder and chat masala. Instead use rock salt or sendha namak.
  3. First boiling and then roasting makes it tastier and less consumption of oil.
  4. You can also use roasted and ground cumin seeds powder, amchur powder or other spices of your choice.
  5. Lastly, garnish it with pomegranate arils to make it healthier and tastier.
