Onion tomato chutney is the spicy, tangy and sweet chutney made from onions, tomatoes, red chillies and some spices. It is one of the most basic condiment to accompany almost all south Indian breakfast recipes like Idli, Dosa, Medu Vada, etc. It is the most popular south Indian chutney recipes typically served in breakfast but can also be served as a side dish in lunch or dinner with basic steamed rice or ghee rice.

Every home has its own way of making the chutney recipe, and it turns out tasty in all ways. There are a variety of chutneys prepared with any vegetable that we use on a daily basis. Most of the south Indian families prefer chutneys made from seasonal vegetables. Few variations of chutneys are Tamarind chutney, Tomato chutney, Coriander chutney, Onion chutney, Raw mango chutney, etc. One such chutney recipe is Onion Tomato chutney main ingredient being the onion.

For making this chutney, the number of onions, tomatoes, red chillies and spices can be altered depending on your taste. To get the dark red colour of chutney, you can increase the number of red chillies. If you like spicy flavour, you can also add 1 or 2 green chillies. Onions are used to provide a mild sweet taste and aroma which balances the tangy taste of tomatoes. Also, it provides a semi-thick consistency and a creamy texture to the chutney.

Serving Onion Tomato chutney

Though, this chutney tastes yum as it is. But, finally tempering it with mustard seeds, red chillies and urad dal, gives an ultimate taste and takes it a level ahead and adds aroma too. You can completely skip the tempering if you are calorie conscious. But, tempering adds more flavours. I have served this chutney with instant rava appam. This combination of rava appam or paniyaram and onion tomato chutney serves as a nutritious and filling breakfast recipe.

In this recipe, I have included one secret ingredient which enhances the taste of this chutney and leaves you mouth-watering. The secret ingredient is Sambhar masala. Somehow, we are in love with the chutney from the time we have included sambhar masala. It gives a nice aroma and the essence of sambhar masala blends very well with the onion tomato mixture. Do try this recipe as it is mentioned and I bet you won’t regret this. Try this chutney recipe with the sambhar masala and let me know in the comments section below how it turned out.
